15 Must- See Spots for You Next Road Trip

There’s something special about Ohio. Whether you’re into waterfalls, wineries, roller coasters, or small-town charm, the Buckeye State is packed with weekend getaway options. Here are 15 of my favorite places to visit—each one perfect for a quick escape and full of unique memories waiting to happen.

1. Hocking Hills State Park

Hocking Hills is one of Ohio’s top nature destinations—and for good reason. With stunning rock formations, waterfalls, and shaded hiking trails, it’s ideal for those craving peace and outdoor adventure. Explore Old Man’s Cave, take in the towering cliffs of Ash Cave, or hike the unique tunnel-like Rock House. There are also plenty of cozy cabins and romantic lodges if you’re planning an overnight stay.

2. Cedar Point

Known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World, Cedar Point is a must for thrill-seekers. With over 70 rides, including 17 roller coasters, it’s one of the top amusement parks in the country. But even if you’re not into big rides, the park’s location on Lake Erie offers gorgeous views, a beach area, and nearby attractions like Cedar Point Shores Waterpark and downtown Sandusky.

3. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Ohio’s only national park is nestled between Cleveland and Akron, offering more than 125 miles of trails, waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and even a historic railway. Brandywine Falls is a popular highlight, and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is perfect for biking or walking along the old canal route. Pack a picnic and take a break at the peaceful Beaver Marsh boardwalk.

4. Put-in-Bay

Hop on a ferry and head to Put-in-Bay, a charming little island on Lake Erie. Known for its lively atmosphere, wineries, and unique attractions like Crystal Cave and the massive Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, it’s a fun weekend destination. Rent a golf cart to explore the island, enjoy lakefront dining, and take in the sunset over the water.

5. Yellow Springs

This artsy, eclectic town has a vibe all its own. Located near Dayton, Yellow Springs is filled with colorful murals, funky shops, and independent cafés. Nearby Glen Helen Nature Preserve and John Bryan State Park offer hiking and outdoor exploring. The town regularly hosts festivals, live music, and farmer’s markets. It’s a perfect mix of culture, nature, and small-town charm.

6. Marblehead Lighthouse State Park

Perched on the shores of Lake Erie, this lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. The surrounding state park is a peaceful spot for a lakeside picnic or stroll, with rocky outcrops and amazing views. You can also climb the lighthouse (seasonally) for a bird’s-eye view or visit the nearby Keeper’s House Museum.

7. The Wilds

This isn’t your average zoo. The Wilds is a wildlife conservation center offering open-air safari tours across nearly 10,000 acres. You can spot giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and zebras all roaming freely in large pastures. It’s educational and exciting—and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even zipline over the animal habitats or stay overnight in a luxury yurt.

8. Geneva-on-the-Lake

Ohio’s original resort town, Geneva-on-the-Lake is a great mix of vintage fun and lakeside relaxation. Spend your day sipping wine at local vineyards, strolling The Strip (lined with arcades, shops, and diners), or taking in a sunset at the lakeshore. Whether you’re here for romance, family fun, or a girls’ weekend, Geneva offers a laid-back, old-school getaway.

9. Roscoe Village

Roscoe Village is a beautifully restored 1800s canal town that gives you a glimpse into Ohio’s past. Costumed interpreters, working craftspeople, and heritage shops make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. There’s also a living history tour, canal boat rides nearby, and charming places to eat and stay. It’s perfect for history lovers or anyone who enjoys slower-paced travel.

10. Sugarcreek- The Little Switzerland of Ohio

Located in the heart of Amish Country, Sugarcreek blends Swiss architecture and culture with classic Ohio charm. Watch the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock chime at the top of the hour, visit local cheese factories, and browse unique shops featuring cuckoo clocks, wood carvings, and Amish furniture. Sugarcreek is especially beautiful during the Swiss Festival in fall.

11. Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market

Whether you’re looking for handmade furniture, local jams, home décor, or a great deal on something unique, this massive indoor flea market has it all. Open seasonally, Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market is clean, friendly, and full of treasures from Ohio’s heartland. You’ll find over 50 vendors, tasty snacks, and lots of local flavor.

12. Amish Country

Drive through peaceful countryside where horse-drawn buggies share the road and homemade signs invite you to stop for pie, quilts, or wood carvings. Amish Country is ideal for unplugging. Visit Berlin, Charm, or Walnut Creek for shops, restaurants, bakeries, and cultural experiences. Don’t forget to grab a loaf of fresh-baked bread or a jar of apple butter to take home.

13. Cass Scenic Railroad -Just across the border in WV

This one’s just over the state line but so close to southeast Ohio that it’s worth the mention. Take a scenic ride on a historic steam engine up to Bald Knob for mountain views you won’t forget. The restored company town at Cass makes for a charming overnight stay with historic company houses available for rent.

14. Findlay Market

Located in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district, Findlay Market is Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market. It’s a colorful place full of local produce, international eats, handmade goods, and street musicians. You’ll find everything from Belgian waffles and fresh pasta to rare spices and custom soaps.

15. Mill Creek Park

You might not expect such beauty in the heart of an old steel town, but Mill Creek Park is one of the best urban parks in America. With over 4,000 acres, it’s home to scenic lakes, trails, gardens, waterfalls, and even a historic stone mill. It’s a peaceful escape for walking, birdwatching, or photography.

See ya on the road

Susan
