On a recent trip through West Virginia, I stumbled upon Arthurdale, a small town on Route 92 with a remarkable past. Created in 1933 as the first—and only—New Deal homestead community, it was Eleanor Roosevelt’s passion project during the Great Depression. Families here experienced indoor plumbing for the first time, danced with the First Lady, and even sent a Thanksgiving turkey to the White House.
