A Swing Through History
Imagine it’s 1971, and John Denver’s iconic song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” has just hit the airwaves. The first four words—“Almost heaven, West Virginia…”—immediately paint a picture of the state’s breathtaking beauty. The song goes on to celebrate the rolling hills, winding roads, and timeless charm that make West Virginia feel like a little slice of heaven on earth.
By 1972, West Virginia University had embraced Country Roads as a tradition, singing it before every home football game. In 2014, the governor officially declared it the state song, and by 2017, West Virginia Tourism had secured the rights to use it as part of their promotional efforts.
Fast forward to 2022, when the Almost Heaven Swing project was launched. Nine handcrafted wooden swings were placed across West Virginia’s nine vacation regions, each offering a perfect spot to take in the stunning scenery. The project quickly became a sensation, with thousands of photos and videos of these swings appearing on Instagram and other social media platforms.
Now, as of March 2026, the number of Almost Heaven swings has grown to 51, with new locations popping up in some of the state’s most picturesque destinations. And who knows? There may be even more to come in the future! But for now, here’s a look at where you can find these iconic swings throughout West Virginia.
A Collaborative Effort
The inception of the “Almost Heaven” swing project is a testament to community collaboration and craftsmanship. In partnership with the West Virginia Department of Tourism, students from the Nicholas County Career and Technical Center took on the challenge of designing, constructing, and installing these swings. Their dedication and skill have resulted in beautiful additions to many scenic spots throughout the state.

Discovering the Swings
There are currently 54 (this includes onces scheduled for 2026) Almost Heaven swings scattered across West Virginia, and I’m on a mission to visit every single one. As I explore each location, I’ll be adding photos with personal snapshots—capturing the beauty of the state from the best seat in the house!
Babcock State Park , Clifftop WV
The Almost Heaven Swing at Babcock State Park is positioned in front of the Glade Creek Grist Mill. Take a short walk from the parking area and enjoy one of the state’s most photographed spots.
Beech Fork Lake – LaValette WV
Head to this beautiful Almost Heaven swing perched near Beech Fork Lake in Wayne County. Explore the native flora and fauna, take a scenic photo from the swing, and marvel at the captivating landscape below from the overhanging cliffs above.
Continue straight past the Rock Hollow Trail entrance (on left) and USACE Beech Fork Lake Dam Access Road (on right).
Turn right to arrive at the Lake Visitor Center parking area. The Rock Hollow Trail entrance sits behind the Visitor Center, adjacent to the USACE Beech Fork Dam Access Road.
Big Ditch Lake – Cowen, WV
Nestled within the beautiful backcountry of Webster County, Big Ditch Lake boasts lovely views and serene conditions for warm-water fishing. Guests should park in the south lot off of Birch River Road to grab a photo on the new photo-op. The swing is just a short walk from the parking lot. While here, don’t miss a stroll around the walking trail that rounds the lake
Blackwater Falls State Park
Located just off the trail to the main overlook, The Almost Heaven Swing at Blackwater Falls State Park is perched in one of the state’s most beautiful regions. The swing is a short walk from the parking lot – located near the ADA-accessible walkway to Blackwater Falls.
Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park – Parkersburg,WV
This Almost Heaven Swing is nestled in the forested region beside the mansion on Blennerhassett Island. Take the short 20-minute ferry boat ride to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park and enjoy this historic swing location.
Note: Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park and the Almost Heaven swing are open seasonally from May until October.
Bluestone State Park – Hinton , WV
This Almost Heaven Swing at Bluestone State Park is located just off of Rt. 20 near Lilly’s Bridge. Pull off into the parking area and enjoy the stunning view of Bluestone Lake.
Buffalo Mountain Trail System, Sprigg, WV
This Almost Heaven Swing is located on the Death Rock Overlook. Once you enter the Buffalo Mountain Trail System, take Trail 10 and then Trail 36, which leads you to the swing.
The swing is positioned high above the mountain town of Williamson and is only accessible by an ATV. Rent one or bring your own to enjoy a beautiful view.
Cacapon Resort State Park – Berkeley Springs
This Almost Heaven Swing boasts stunning mountain views as far as the eye can see. Follow Overlook Trail – Park Road to the parking area, and the swing is just steps away from the observation deck.
4-H Camp Pioneer, Beverly, WV
Head to Beverly in Randolph County and take a picture at this Almost Heaven swing. Find the swing perched at 4-H Camp Pioneer. You’ll be amazed by the beautiful mountain and pond as your backdrop. Take Scott’s Lake Road, look for the Camp Pioneer sign and park in the nearby lot. A gravel path leads to the swing.
Canaan Valley Resort State Park – Davis, WV
The Almost Heaven Swing at Canaan Valley Resort State Park overlooks the scenic Balsam Swamp. Find the swing near the parking area and enjoy the view of this slice of Tucker County.
Cedar Lake Conference Center, Ripley, WV
Head to the peaceful lakeside of Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley. This Almost Heaven Swing is perched near the chapel and boasts a relaxing lake view. Just turn onto FFA Drive and park in one of the nearby lots for easy access.
University of Charleston – Charleston
Located on the lawn of the University of Charleston, this Almost Heaven Swing boasts a direct view of the State Capitol. Pull into the University parking area and turn left to walk toward the boathouse. The swing is located adjacent to the fire pit.
Charles Fork Lake, Spencer, WV
This Almost Heaven swing boasts a stunning view of Charles Fork Lake in the Roane County town of Spencer. Park in the parking lot just off Charles Fork Road and follow the gentle slope leading to the swing – overlooking the scenic lake below.
During the winter, park at the gate and take a short hike to the swing.
Chief Logan State Park – Logan,WV
This Almost Heaven Swing is perched beside the Chief Logan Lodge and Conference Center – boasting breathtaking mountain views. Take a short walk from the nearby parking lot and soak in the surrounding scenery.
Coppers Rock State Forest – Bruceton, WV
From the parking lot closest to the main overlook and the gift shop, walk on the cobblestone path farthest to the left. Pass the pavilion and the Almost Heaven Swing will be to your left – with a lush forest backdrop.
NOTE: The Overlook is closed for bridge replacement.
Drawdy Falls- Peytona, WV
Tucked within the trees just off Route 3 in Boone County, this Almost Heaven swing is perched near a series of falls that reach six feet in height. This is also a featured stop on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. Parking is available at the Roadside Park adjacent to the falls.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park,Hillsboro WV
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is packed with Civil War history. Find the Almost Heaven Swing perched near the parking area, which is also close to the lookout tower.
East River Mountain Overlook- Bluefield, WV
This Almost Heaven Swing is perched in the heart of Bluefield. This swing is located just outside of the parking lot and makes for a beautiful setting to watch the sunset.
Gassaway Depot- Gassaway, WV
Gassaway Depot is the town of Gassaway is a historic railway depot. You can slow down and explore more of the depot’s history by checking out the Almost Heaven Swing, which is located just outside of the building.
Grand Vue Park, Moundsville, WV
This Almost Heaven swing is a relaxing spot to take in views of Moundsville. Just take a short walk from the parking area to the scenic overlook and enjoy the view.
Grantsville- Grantsville, WV
Located in Grantsville, this Almost Heaven swing is situated at what was once the Calhoun County High School and is now a National Historic Landmark. A short walk from the gravel parking lot beside the pool will bring you to a paved, flat trail that’s ADA accessible and leads to the beautifully placed swing along the Little Kanawha River.
Lake Stephens – Beckley,WV
Perched on the scenic overlook at Lake Stephens in Raleigh County, this swing boasts a stunning view of the beautiful 272-acre lake below. The swing is a short walk away from the parking lot.
Lost River State Park- Mathias, WV
Prepare for unbeatable panoramic views at Lost River State Park. When you arrive, park near the horse stable and hike the White Oak Trail to the Cranny Crow Overlook (4 miles out-and-back). The swing is nearby to enjoy the view.
Miracle Mountain Wilderness Park- Elbert, WV
Visit Miracle Mountain Wilderness Park for a photo on this Almost Heaven swing. Overlooking McDowell County, this spot provides a picturesque and peaceful escape. Parking is available in the field adjacent to the swing.
Mason-Dixon Historical Park, Core, WV
Perched in Mason-Dixon Historical Park, this Almost Heaven Swing makes an excellent spot to enjoy the park’s scenery. Parking is available in the lower lot near the baseball field with the trailhead nearby. Hike for a half-mile along the Green Trail to the swing, which you’ll find near the Third Crossing of Dunkard Creek, across from the Bluebell/Fairy Door Trail.
Moncove Lake, Sweet Springs, WV
Moncove Lake is a relaxing spot to hop on an Almost Heaven Swing. To access the swing, drive on Moncove Lake Access Road past the swimming pool toward Diamond Hollow Trail. Parking is available near the lake and beside the swing.
Tater Hill Overlook – Mullens
North Bend State Park, Cairo WV
Explore this Almost Heaven swing at the beautiful North Bend State Park. To find this ADA-accessible swing, go to the “Jug handle” area off Main Park Road. This area has a road to parking, along with scenic picnic tables and seating. The swing can also be accessed from the Southern Railroad Trail or Castle Rock Trail.
Calhoun County Community Center- Grantsville, WV
Wetzel County 4H Campground- New Martinsville
Perched at the highest point of the Wetzel County 4-H Campground trail systems, this Almost Heaven swing is at the top of “Monarch Trail.” Begin at the trailhead and follow the signs to reach the top of the trail — a view that gives way to 360-degree views of the rolling mountains. This two-mile loop is perfect for walkers, runners and bikers alike.
Pleasants County Park- St. Marys, WV
Explore this beautiful Almost Heaven in the heart of Pleasants County. The swing is perched directly in front of the waterfalls at Pleasants County Park in St. Marys.
Wellsburg River Front- Wesllsburg, WV
Relax and take a scenic photo on this scenic Almost Heaven swing in Wellsburg. Find this swing perched near the gazebo above the Wellsburg Wharf along the Ohio River.
Oglebay Park Resort, Wheeling, WV
This Almost Heaven Swing offers stunning seasonal views year-round. Drive to the stoplight near the Good Zoo entrance, drive .2 miles and find the swing near the stag statue. The swing is also near the Susan Wheeler Walking Trail.

Just off U.S. 119, this Almost Heaven Swing sits in front of the historic Philippi Covered Bridge. Parking is available near the bridge.
Pipestem Resort State Park – Pipestem, WV
This Almost Heaven Swing is perched in Pipestem Resort State Park near the picnic shelter and parking area. Enjoy the stunning view of the rolling hills and soak in the surrounding scenery.
Rail Explorers Depot- Clay, WV
Located at the Rail Explorers depot next to the scenic Buffalo Creek, this Almost Heaven Swing boasts a picturesque spot to soak in West Virginia’s stunning mountain landscapes.
Resort at Glade Springs
Rockhouse Trail System- Man, WV
Head to Trail 21 on the Rockhouse Trail System to discover this scenic Almost Heaven Swing. Perched along the side of the trail, this swing overlooks the charming town of Man and is accessible via a UTV ride. Don’t have your own UTV? You can easily rent one from BAC Country Rentals and be on your way. Parking is available at the Rockhouse Trailhead parking area on Rockhouse Creek Road.
Rotary Park – Huntington, WV
Perched on a scenic overlook in Rotary Park in Huntington, this Almost Heaven swing boasts a stunning view of the surrounding area. By searching “Rotary Park Trail Parking” on your map app, you’ll be routed to the ADA-accessible trail at Upper Rotary. Follow the paved walkway all the way to the swing. Look for a locked chain preventing vehicle access. From the parking lot to the swing, enjoy a 5-10-minute walk to the swing.
Shepherdstown, WV
Explore this beautiful Almost Heaven Swing in the heart of Shepherdstown. Approach the town from points west via Highway 480/Duke Street. In town, turn east onto High Street for four blocks. Turn left onto Mill Street, drive two blocks, then turn right onto Rumsey Monument Road. Parking is available on Mill Street, with limited parking also available on the Park grounds.
Snowshoe Mountain, Snowshoe WV
This Almost Heaven Swing sits atop the Skidder Ski Slope, adjacent to the lift terminal and gives way to scenic views of rolling hills and valleys. The swing can be reached via a short walk from the Village.
Sportsman’s Park in Wirt County
Stonewall Resort State Park, Roanoke, WV
Nestled on the lake side of the main lodge directly behind the Hickory building, this swing has stunning, tranquil views. Getting there is simple, follow the Bright Star Park Trail to the back of the lodge.
Summersville Lake State Park, Summerville, WV
Located within the state’s newest state park, this Almost Heaven Swing is the perfect spot to relax at Summersville Lake State Park. Parking is available with the swing located just up the hill.
Tamarack Marketplace – Beckley, WV
Perched just outside the entrance at Tamarack Marketplace in Beckley, this Almost Heaven Swing is the perfect spot to relax before and after shopping in the plaza.
Tomlinson Run State Park
Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, Point Pleasant, WV
At the beautiful Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, this Almost Heaven Swing is perched along the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers – with the Silver Memorial Bridge in the background.
Tygart Lake State Park
Valley Falls State Park
This Almost Heaven swing makes the perfect spot to enjoy the scenery of Valley Falls State Park. Just walk across the bridge from the parking area and follow the paved path toward the upper falls. Enjoy this stunning backdrop and the relaxing sound of rushing cascades
Valley Park – Hurricane, WV
Nestled within Putnam County’s serene Valley Park, this Almost Heaven Swing boasts a relaxing view of the pond and surrounding wilderness. Walk toward the back of park to the loop, go past the rocks and you’ll find the swing on back side of pond.
Wheeling Heritage Port- Wheeling,WV
Overlooking the iconic Wheeling Suspension Bridge and the Ohio River, the swing at Wheeling Heritage Port is located on a grassy patch just off the walkway to the river
West Virginia State Capitol
This Almost Heaven swing is perched just outside the beautiful West Virginia Capitol Building and faces the Kanawha Boulevard and the Kanawha River. Take your swing selfie here and enjoy exploring the State Capitol.
Petersburg River Access – Petersburg,WV
Just installed in March of 2026, Not even on the West Virginia Tourism Site.

My Final Thoughts
I plan on visiting as many swing locations as I can, it may take me while since they keep adding new locations.
With deep family roots in the state—both of my parents grew up here—I spent much of my childhood visiting West Virginia, and it has always held a special place in my heart. My hope is to inspire you to plan a visit, whether it’s for a weekend getaway or just a scenic drive through its winding roads. No matter how long you stay, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
