Celebrating History-Heritage and Handcrafted Fun!

Discover the Charm of PA's Iconic Bridges

Covered bridges are more than just functional structures — they’re living pieces of history. With their charming wooden trusses and scenic creekside settings, Pennsylvania’s covered bridges harken back to a time when craftsmanship, community, and tradition were at the heart of travel and transportation.

Pennsylvania holds the proud title of having more historic covered bridges than any other state in the U.S., with over 200 still standing today. Once used as vital connectors for farmers, travelers, and merchants, these bridges now serve as treasured landmarks, drawing in visitors from around the world.

Each fall, the Keystone State pays tribute to this rich heritage with two major festivals dedicated to celebrating these iconic spans — one in Washington & Greene Counties, and the other at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds in Columbia County. These festivals combine local culture, arts and crafts, regional food, and immersive experiences that showcase the covered bridges in all their autumn glory.

Whether you’re a lover of history, a leaf-peeper, a shopper, or simply looking for a unique way to enjoy fall in Pennsylvania, these festivals deserve a place on your calendar.

EQT Washington & Greene Counties’

Covered Bridge Festival

One of the best times to visit the covered bridges of Washington County is during the annual Covered Bridge Festival, held every year on the third weekend of September. In 2025, the festival will take place September 20–21, and trust me—you don’t want to miss it!

Started in 1971, the festival was created to celebrate these beautiful, historic wooden structures and the role they’ve played in Pennsylvania’s past. What began as a local gathering has grown into a beloved tradition across nine different bridge locations in Washington and Greene Counties, each offering its own unique experience.

Festival Locations

At every bridge site, you’ll find a blend of local crafters, homemade food, live entertainment, and community spirit. Each location puts its own spin on the event, from handcrafted decor and fall-themed goods to regional delicacies and good old-fashioned music.

Here are the nine official festival locations for 2025:

  • Brownlee Bridge

  • Carmichaels Bridge

  • Ebenezer Bridge

  • Henry Bridge

  • Hughes Bridge

  • McClurg (Devil’s Den) Bridge

  • Pine Bank Bridge

  • White Bridge

  • Wyit Sprowls Bridge

Whether you’re hunting for unique gifts, enjoying a bite of funnel cake, or just relaxing to some local bluegrass, there’s something for everyone.

Columbia & Montour Counties

Nestled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, Columbia and Montour Counties are home to some of the most picturesque and well-preserved covered bridges in the state. With over 20 historic covered bridges scattered throughout the region, it’s no surprise that this area has become a top destination for bridge enthusiasts and fall travelers alike.

Many of these bridges date back to the 1800s, built by skilled craftsmen using traditional wooden truss designs like the Burr Arch and Queen Post. Originally constructed to protect the bridge decks from the elements and extend their lifespans, these covered structures quickly became symbols of rural ingenuity and charm. Today, the counties take great pride in preserving these landmarks, offering scenic driving routes and hosting annual events like the Covered Bridge & Arts Festival to share their legacy with visitors from near and far.

Covered Bridge & Arts Festival - Bloomsburg, PA

Held at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds (980 West Main St., Bloomsburg, PA 17815), this four-day festival is situated in the heart of beautiful Central Pennsylvania. Now in its 42nd year, the Covered Bridge & Arts Festival has grown into one of the largest craft festivals on the East Coast, attracting nearly 150,000 visitors annually.

With hundreds of unique craft and food vendors, there’s something for everyone — from handmade and traditional crafts to turned wood, glasswork, textiles, jewelry, pottery, and holiday décor. Whether you’re looking for seasonal gifts, one-of-a-kind artwork, or simply a fun day out, this festival delivers.

Best of all? Admission and parking are completely free, making this a budget-friendly event perfect for a fall day trip or weekend getaway.

See You on the Bridge!

Whether you’re drawn in by the history, the handcrafted treasures, or the breathtaking fall scenery, these two covered bridge festivals offer the perfect way to experience the charm of Pennsylvania in the autumn. From the rolling hills of Washington & Greene Counties to the bustling fairgrounds of Bloomsburg, each festival has its own unique flavor — and I can’t wait to take it all in. If you’re planning to attend either event, I hope our paths cross. And if you’re new to covered bridge adventures, let this be the year you start your own journey. There’s just something magical about standing beneath one of these wooden giants, camera in hand, and soaking in a piece of history.

See ya on the road

My Final Thoughts

I’ve always had a soft spot for covered bridges — and these festivals are the perfect way to experience their charm up close. This year, I’m planning to attend both the Washington & Greene Counties Covered Bridge Festival and the Bloomsburg Covered Bridge & Arts Festival.

For the Washington & Greene event, I’m setting out to visit all nine bridge locations over the weekend. If you’re exploring too, keep an eye out for the lady with the camera gear — that’s me! I’d love it if you stopped to say hello.

Whether you’re into scenic drives, homemade crafts, or simply soaking in small-town fall vibes, these festivals are the perfect way to celebrate Pennsylvania’s history and beauty. Let’s enjoy the season — one covered bridge at a time.
