There’s something magical about walking down a street and suddenly finding yourself beneath a canopy of vibrant umbrellas suspended in the sky. These whimsical displays — often called Umbrella Alleys or Umbrella Projects — have popped up in towns and cities all across the United States, drawing in curious travelers, photographers, and art lovers alike. But where did this colorful trend begin, and where can you find some of the best installations in the USA ? Let’s take a walk through history and across the country to find out.

The idea of hanging umbrellas over public spaces began far from American soil. It all started in Águeda, Portugal in 2011, as part of the Ágitagueda Art Festival. The goal? To bring color and charm to the city’s otherwise simple streets — and to provide shade during the hot summer months. The installation quickly went viral, and the Umbrella Sky Project was born.

This artistic initiative by Portuguese company Sextafeira Produções inspired cities around the world to create their own versions, blending public art with playful function. Today, it’s one of the most Instagrammable trends in urban design

From coast to coast, umbrella installations have been embraced by towns both big and small. Whether as permanent art features or temporary exhibits, these installations continue to bring joy and color to communities.

Here are a few standout spots where you can find umbrella-covered walkways in the USA:

I recently set out to find cities and towns where I could experience the magic of umbrella alleys right here in the USA. Living in Pittsburgh, I decided to start my search locally — and to my surprise, I discovered that Pittsburgh had its very own umbrella exhibit! For several years, the Three Rivers Arts Festival featured a stunning display of colorful umbrellas suspended over Market Square. It was a vibrant, cheerful installation that brought so much life to the downtown area. Sadly, the exhibit ended in 2022, but it definitely sparked my interest in tracking down other umbrella skies across the country. I hope Pittsburgh will consider bringing it back once the construction at Point State Park is complete and the Arts Festival returns to that location.

Where else could I find this exhibit near me? This next location will surprise you as much as it did me.

Nestled in the East Fifth Street Historic District of East Liverpool, Ohio, Umbrella Alley (also known as “Umbrellas on Dawson Way”) sprinkles vibrant color overhead thanks to the efforts of the East Liverpool–Calcutta Area Garden Club Positioned between the Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame/Lou Holtz Museum and the former Crooks Furniture building, this charming canopy complements a nearby shade garden and decorative pavement 

The initiative, launched in 2022, started with around 80 festive umbrellas—but following a windy mishap, organizers refined their installation technique to allow for airflow and flexibility Today, the alley welcomes visitors with rotating programs that include yoga sessions, lunchtime music, and cozy seating—month after mont

Tucked into a charming 180‑foot brick alley off Main Street in downtown Louisville, Ohio, this vibrant installation lifts nearly 200 multicolored umbrellas about 20 feet overhead. It’s more than just a photo backdrop—it’s a thoughtfully designed community space bursting with public art and welcoming energy 

Originally brought to life in May 2020 by local volunteers Rick and Raeann Guiley—along with contributions from the city of Louisville, ArtsinStark, and neighborhood businesses—the project aimed to brighten a forgotten alley and draw people back downtown post-COVID‑19 lockdowns 

Alongside the floating canopy, you’ll find:

• A rotating, 8 × 44-foot mural that refreshes twice a year

• Chalk-art zones and a playable piano in summer

• Colorful tables, benches, and community-centered touches 

Open 24/7 and free, the space invites you to linger—whether you’re grabbing lunch on floating benches, playing music, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. It’s become Louisville’s pride and one of Stark County’s most Instagrammable community art spots

Nestled in the heart of West Village—downtown Chattanooga’s vibrant arts and dining district—Umbrella Alley offers a burst of color overhead at Chestnut & Pine Street (between 6th and 7th Streets), directly across from Easy Bistro and the historic Read House hotel

Elmhurst, a charming suburb just west of Chicago, joined the global umbrella trend with its own Umbrella Sky Project. Launched in 2023, this installation sprang up in three downtown Elmhurst locations, including Schiller Court at York & Schiller Streets, near the public library/art museum, and the North York Stage The city became just the sixth U.S. city to host this awe-inspiring display

Baytown, Texas, adds a splash of color to its downtown with its own Umbrella Alley, a delightful hidden gem located right behind West Texas Avenue in the downtown arts district. This installation features dozens of bright, multicolored umbrellas suspended overhead, transforming what was once an ordinary alley into a cheerful, must-see walkway.

Baytown’s Umbrella Alley is part of the city’s growing effort to highlight local art and encourage people to explore the revitalized historic district. Alongside the umbrellas, visitors will find vibrant murals by local artists, creative sculptures, and nearby shops and cafés that make this spot worth lingering in.

Open year-round, Orange Street Alley is more than just a pretty photo op. The alley is lined with murals by local artists, celebrating the culture and creativity of the community. Restaurants, shops, and cozy cafés are just steps away, making it the perfect place to stop for lunch or a leisurely stroll during a day of exploring downtown Redlands.

If you’re exploring the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, you might stumble upon one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots — the Umbrella Street near La Fortaleza, also known as Fortaleza Street or Calle Fortaleza. Hundreds of colorful umbrellas float above this charming stretch, transforming it into a magical tunnel of color that draws visitors from all over the world.

This installation began as part of “Sombrillas Calle Fortaleza,” a project started by Puerto Rico’s local government to bring hope and brightness to the historic district following Hurricane Maria. Each summer, hundreds of bright umbrellas are suspended above Cross Insurance Center’s West Market Square, creating a whimsical canopy that delights both locals and visitors. Inspired by the original Umbrella Sky Project in Portugal, Bangor’s version is part of the city’s effort to support public art and draw people into the downtown area for shopping, dining, and community events.

The colorful canopy is typically installed during the warmer months, adding extra charm to Bangor’s festivals and farmers’ markets. Visitors can stroll underneath the umbrellas, enjoy live music, grab a coffee from a nearby café, and snap the perfect Maine summer photo.

For a small city, Bangor proves that you don’t have to be big to think big when it comes to public art. If you’re planning a road trip through New England, this unexpected burst of color is worth a stop!

Nestled amidst the vibrant murals of Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco’s Umbrella Alley first debuted in 2019, transforming a narrow passageway on Beach Street into a kaleidoscope of color and creativity . Overhead, dozens of multicolored umbrellas — often paired with balloons — dance above visitors, while the alley walls showcase immersive murals like “Greetings from San Francisco,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” and “Fisherman’s Wharf Honey Bear”

Operated largely by volunteers and sustained through small admission donations (~$5), Umbrella Alley offers a brief but memorable experience — roughly 3½ minutes — that combines public art, community spirit, and pure fun It quickly became a beloved stop for tourists touring the Wharf, often bundled with Jeep, tuk‑tuk, or scooter tours

As of April 24, 2025, the original location is temporarily closed as the installation relocates to a new site and prepares for an exciting Umbrella Alley 2.0 relaunch in late summer  When it returns, expect the same charming blend of floating umbrellas, colorful murals, and that signature San Francisco energy.
