Parkette’s story, however, isn’t just about its food—it’s about its resilience. After facing the threat of closure, brothers Jeff and Randy Kaplan stepped in and refurbished the beloved restaurant in 2008. They preserved the Parkette’s original charm, including its iconic neon sign featuring a carhop that’s been a familiar sight to Lexington locals for decades.

But sadly, after more than 70 years of serving the community, Parkette Drive-In has turned off its neon lights for good. With tears in his eyes, Randy Kaplan confirmed the closure after a day of confusion, saying, “We’re devastated. Parkette is a landmark, an icon in this community. Over the last 13 years, three months, and 20 days, it was my honor to be a part of that.”

For generations, Parkette Drive-In was more than just a place to grab a burger—it was a piece of Lexington’s heart and history. Though it’s no longer serving its famous Poor Boys, Parkette will always be remembered as one of the city’s oldest and most nostalgic restaurants.

King – Tut- Permanently  Closed

Location: Beckley, WV

We can’t write about historic drive-ins across the country without mentioning King Tut Drive-In in Beckley, West Virginia. Located in the heart of Beckley since the early 1940s, King Tut provided a true, authentic drive-in experience to generations of loyal customers. Sadly, this beloved landmark has closed its doors.

Owners Dave and Michelle McKay announced on the King Tut Drive-In Facebook page that the restaurant would be closing on September 5, 2023. They kept the restaurant open for the month of August, not only to allow locals to come and say their goodbyes but also to help their dedicated employees find new jobs. While selling the restaurant as a drive-in was a difficult decision, the lots it occupied became the major interest for buyers. Contrary to rumors, the property was not purchased by United Rentals, as the owners clarified in their post.

With the passing of the original owners, the family made the heartbreaking choice to close and sell the property, and today, the building is gone. For decades, King Tut Drive-In was more than just a place to grab a meal—it was a community staple, a nostalgic piece of Beckley’s history. It will be deeply missed by all who had the chance to experience its charm.
