On one of my recent travel adventures, I was driving along Smock Highway in Meadville, Pennsylvania, when something unusual caught my eye—a vibrant, 1,200-foot-long mural made entirely of old road signs! This unique roadside art installation, officially known as the PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden, is a must-see for anyone exploring northwestern Pennsylvania. The sculpture garden began in 2000 when Allegheny College art professor Amara Geffen and her students collaborated with PennDOT to breathe new life into old road signs. This installation, titled “Signs & Flowers,” was the first project completed by Amara Geffen and her students before the larger mural came to life. These towering metal flowers, located on a small hill nearby, are a beautiful and creative representation of how something as ordinary as road signs can be transformed into art. How to Visit the PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden

The PennDOT Road Sign Sculpture Garden is located just southwest of downtown Meadville, only about half a mile from Interstate 79, making it an easy and worthwhile stop if you’re traveling through northwestern Pennsylvania. You’ll find the mural in front of the PennDOT Maintenance Building at 18499 Smock Highway.

When it comes to parking, it can be a little tricky. There is a parking lot at the maintenance building, but there’s no official signage allowing public parking, so keep that in mind if you choose to park there. Another option is the shopping center across the street, though that lot is typically reserved for customers only.

As you explore, be sure to stay cautious since the mural is along a busy road. It’s easy to get caught up in the art and accidentally step too close to traffic while walking or taking photos, so always stay aware of your surroundings.
